A non-toxic product is free of parabens, phthalates, fragrance/parfume/scent, sulfates (Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)) toulene (benzene, toluol, phenylmethane, methylbenzene), BHT, PEG and other harmful chemicals.
Even avoiding all of this you will still find the ingredients may look like a foreign language.
I used my resources and colleagues to find the best products for this article but companies change their ingredients all the time and we are constantly discovering new toxins in ingredients we originally thought were non-toxic. This is my disclaimer, buyer beware.
It is often a challenge to find a product that is both effective and non-toxic. As you evaluate these products please share your review with me.
Even essential oils can be irritating to some individuals, children and pets. Specifically, citrus oils, such as those from orange and lemon peels. These include geraniol, limonene, and linalool.
Personally I do like to use certain pure essential oils as a fragrance in the products I use.
I often tell my patients that health is along a spectrum. One end is the purist, whole food, organic, most natural, you can get. The other end is McDonalds, Colgate and Bounce dryer sheets.
If you are somewhere in the middle and preferably closer to the natural side…consider that a “win”.
Saying all that, here are the most natural and non-toxic products I have found. It is not exhaustive and there are certainly others.
